How to get to | Malaysia

This post is how to get to Malaysia generally. There is also a specific post on how to get to Sabah (Malaysian state).

This is part of a series of blog entries on how to get to countries and places. Here is a link to the index. I plan to eventually cover every country and some other places. If you have a request for a particular country or place please use the email me link at top right, or leave a comment.

The easiest way to reach Malaysia is by air (mainly to Kuala Lumpur), otherwise there are buses and trains from Singapore and Thailand. Flight options include:
  • Star Alliance - Air China, EgyptAir, Lufthansa, Singapore (also Penang), Thai (also Penang)
  • Oneworld - Cathay Pacific (also Penang), Japan
  • Sky Team - China Southern, KLM, Korean
  • Other selected - Air Asia, Malaysian Airlines, most Asian low cost airlines, most Persian Gulf airlines

TIP There are a lot of airlines flying between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and Jakarta. This includes some fifth freedom flights (eg Lufthansa and EgyptAir). Short haul fares are generally low or very low, especially on routes with lots of competition amongst low cost carriers.

TIP Longhaul fares to Malaysia tend to be priced similar to other places in Southeast Asia as there are not so many options.

TIP For longhaul fares from Southeast Asia, Malaysia may be cheaper than Singapore but is usually more expensive than Indonesia.
