How to get to | Galapagos Islands

This is part of a series of blog entries on how to get to countries and places. Here is a link to the index. I plan to eventually cover every country and some other places. If you have a request for a particular country or place please use the email me link at top right, or leave a comment.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are relatively hard to get to. Visitors can arrive by cruise ship or by air, both relatively expensive and infrequent. There are a couple of small airports in the Galapagos Islands, served only by a couple of local airlines. LAN Ecuador has been trying for years to add flights to the islands, but at time of writing has still not started.

TIP Local fares (bought in Ecuador) are cheaper than air fares charged to foreigners. It is cheaper to fly from Guayaquil than from Quito.

TIP Flights to Galapagos Islands, like flights to Lord Howe Island, are weight restricted. Do not try to bring lots of luggage.

The Galapagos Islands are the most incredible living museum of evolutionary changes, with a huge variety of exotic species (birds, land animals, plants) and landscapes not seen anywhere else.

Some great tips, thanks for the post! I love the picture! If you are interested, I have a list of Galapagos travel tips too at Galapagos Travel.

I'll see if I can edit it to include some of your tips as well.

If you have bought a cruise ahead of time, the specific boat/yacht in question already has the necessary flight spaces to match the cruise & dates.

The standard airlines used by all the Galapagos cruise operators are TAME and AEROGAL.

Thoroughly enjoyed your blog about how to get to the Galapagos Islands, but you left out one crucial and very popular way to get to these precious little stones. More and more people are going on cruise ships and taking them to the galapagos islands these days. Might wanna make a mention of that.
