How to get to | Madagascar

This is part of a series of blog entries on how to get to countries and places. Here is a link to the index. I plan to eventually cover every country and some other places. If you have a request for a particular country or place please use the email me link at top right, or leave a comment.

The only practical way to reach Madagascar is by air at Antananarivo. Airlines flying to Madagascar include:
  • Star Alliance - none
  • Oneworld - none
  • Sky Team - Air France, Kenya Airways
  • Other selected - Air Madagascar (from Johannesburg, Mauritius, Reunion, Paris, Milan and Bangkok), Air Mauritius, Air Austral, Corsair (from Paris)

TIP Book early for award or discounted fares on Air France, especially in business class.

TIP Due to the limited connections and long distances involved it is not possible to include Madagascar on an around the world ticket (except possibly Sky Team).

I haven't found many ways to get to/from Madagascar cheaply. If any reader knows and can share that would be appreciated.

If you can fly to Mauritius (say, on a OneWorld RTW ticket), you can use Air Mauritius to fly to Antananarivo for 8,825.00 Mauritian rupees (or about $275).

Concur on MRU being the cheapest place to go to Madagascar from. FWIW Emirates started publishing through fares to TNR (with the last leg from MRU on Air Mauritius) from a lot of places and these are somewhat lower than what AF and MD charge.

There's also a SA subsidiary that flies to TNR from JNB so it is somewhat possible to get there on Star Alliance. (There's a thread on FT in the *A forum and some people claim they were able to get it on BD miles).
